Matthew V. CLEVELAND married Martha A. H. ELLIS on 8 Sep 1855 in Cass (presently named Bartow) Co., GA. There were no CLEVELAND households in the Cass Co. 1850 Census Index, but the following ELLIS households were listed: Enoch, Isaac, Russel, Stephen, and Jesse (all on pages 219 and 220 in the 12th Division--unknown relationships). In the 1860 Census, Matthew and Martha were living in Ashville Twp., St. Clair Co., AL. Also listed in the Ashville Twp. 1860 Census Index as heads of household were Enoch, Stephen, Stephen D., and William ELLIS (unknown relationships). In 1866, before they moved west, they appointed Enoch ELLIS (unknown relationship) to sell their Huntsville, Alabama land. Matthew and Martha's first 3 children were born in AL (1859-1867). The next child was born in TN (1869). By 1870, they had settled their family in St. Francis Twp., Greene Co., AR where the remaining four children were born (1872-1878). Their children's names were Russell Reno, Alton S., Alterstatz, Artamissy, John Wesley, Olive A., Rosa L., and Georgia A. Matthew was born 19 Jul 1935 in GA and died 16 Jul 1882 in Paragould, Greene Co., AR. He enlisted 1861 from St. Clair and served in the 25th Regiment, Alabama Infantry. He indicated that both of his parents were born in South Carolina. Martha was born 16 Dec 1839 in GA and died 21 Oct 1918 in Paragould, Greene Co., AR. She also indicated that both of her parents were born in South Carolina. Believe Matthew V. CLEVELAND ties into the TUGALOO RIVER/CLEVELAND'S FERRY branch of the CLEVELAND families that lived in Oconee/Abbeyville/Pickens/Pendleton Co.'s, SC as well as in Hart/Franklin Co.'s, GA. Believe Martha A. M. ELLIS ties into the PINE LOG branch of the ELLIS families that lived in Cass/Bartow Co.'s, GA as well as in Pickens/Pendleton/Edgefield Co.'s SC.
