I have only 2 generations of Merritts that I can find.
William Clifford Merritt-b. ? d. 18 Mar 1916, GA
(m. 1908, Tallapoosa, Haralson Co., GA)
+Georgie Bordie Shae MAXWELL b. 23 Sep 1890, GA
They had four children:
Mary Pauline
Evelyn
Lois Marie b. 1911, GA
Mildred b. 9 Dec 1913, GA d. Feb 1979, Haralson, GA
+ Albert Anderson BELL b. 26 Oct 1911, AL or GA
Mildred is my great-grandmother. Here is a story told to me by my grandmother about William Clifford. He was full-blooded Cherokee Indian, and he was serving in the U.S. Army, when he received word that his wife was having their last daughter. He received a special leave to go be with his wife, but as he was walking out of the fort (or camp), another soldier thought he was running away, and since he was Cherokee Indian, this white soldier shot and killed him. He never got to see his daughter.
It is such a sad story, and I think for this reason, I have been very unsuccessful in finding any information on him. Where/when was he born? Parents? Of course, it doesn't help that the courthouse containing this side of my family's records burned down a long time ago.
Someone please help me add to this record!!! Since this doesn't go back too far, maybe all of you can look at your records and see if there is a William Clifford as a descendent??? Thanks so much! :)
