Mt. Zion was never a town. It was a community which grew up around the Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church, which was organized in 1813. There was also a school here along with other churches as well as some fine homes. The school continued until ca. 1870 (I think) and services were held in Mt. Zion until 1903 when the membership had dwindled from 130 to less than 10. The church was then sold to the Mt Zion Methodist Church which worshiped here until 1958. The property now belongs to the Hancock Co. Foundation for Historic Presrvation. The Mt. Zion Baptist church and Mt Zion Methodist Church were organized by 1830. According to the Hancock Co., Ga. marriage records Henry Lundy and Mary W. Childers were married April 22, 1824 by the Rev. Benjamin Guildersleeves. He was a minister of Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church. In its heyday, Mt. Zion waa considered a fine place to live with many educational and cultural resources. Unfortunately itis all gone now. I hope this information is useful.
