The following is the transcription of a document handwritten ca 1900 by a descendant of this line. I am looking for any additional information on these families. I would like to find out how much of this remeberance is true. Genealogy of Jonathan Davis and his Wife Sarah Frances Mason Davis Jonathan Davis was born in North Carolina, moved to Hancock County, Georgia. There married Sarah Frances Mason, the daughter of William and Frances Whatley Mason who immigrated from Virginia to Hancock Co. Georgia where they reared all of the children, three sons and five daughters. Frances Mason was a Whatley before marriage. The Whatleys were related to the Martins (?) of Virginia. William Mason was a son of a Dr. Mason, a surgeon in the Revolutionary War. We had the scales in which his father weighed the medicine in those days. It is said he was a relative of George Mason, author of the celebrated "Bill of Rights" which some think equal to the "Declaration of Independence" Geroge Mason has a statue in Richmond to commemorate the patriotic deed. Jonathan Davis and his wife Sarah Francis Mason had four daughters and one son viz (?) Mary Davis who married Avington Felps Smith, the second daughter Elizabeth married Robert Mitchell, who distinguished himself in the War of 1812 and for whom a county in Georgia is named, the county named Cammilla (?) for his beautiful grand-daughter. The third daughter Harriet Davis married Henry Griggs and settled in Fayette County, Georgia, where they reared a family of eight children. three daughters and five sons. Caroline Matilda Davis was the youngest daughter and married Josiah U. (?) Basheldor (?) of Augusta , Ga. removing thrice to Marion County, Ga to La Fayette Alabama in 1834 where they reared their children. Elbert Davis was the only son of Jonathan Davis and Sarah Francis Davis. He died unmarried soon after reaching manhood. Three daughters of Jonathan and Sarah Mason Davis, Mary, Elizabeth and Harriet married men of promminent families of Hancock Co. Georgia. Sarah Francis Mason died when her youngest daughter was still an infant. Jonathan DAvis married a second time to a Miss Waller (?) by whom he had three sons viz. Jonathan, Almon and Eldred. Mary Davis married Avington Smith by whom she had four sons and three daughters. viz Jonathan Newton Smith, William Elbert Smith, Ezekiel Carraway Smith, Albert Mason Smith, Sarah and Louisa Phereby Smith. Avington Smith moved to Shelby Springs, Shelby County, Alabama in 1826- lived one year there and moved to Bibb County, Ala, where he lived until he died on which is known as the Smith Place, near Brierfield, Ala. Avington Smith was related to General Robert E. Lee and to the Duchess of marlborough, whose grandfather was a Smith of Mobile, Al. father of Mrs. William K. (?) Vanderbilt. Our greatgrandmother Smith was a Miss Phelps, my great-grandfather Smith was a Miss Carraway - a descendant of the noted John Carrraway who was killed by the indians in South Carolina. This testament was likely written prior to 1900. Naturally this document may contain inaccurate items and some wishful thinking (I mean, who doesn't want to be kin to Gen Robert E. Lee?) The author is unknown to me although I fancy that it may have been one of the six children of Ezekiel Carraway Smith (1819-1890) and his wife Tabitha Elizabeth Fancher (1825-1906) of Bibb County AL , the line through which this document passed. I have the SMITH line and the CARRAWAY lineages but would like more details on the PHELPS, WHATLEY, MASON and DAVIS families. Thanks, Paige Gardner Smith Trussville AL paige.g.smith@mindspring.com
