The original Friar farm in Habersham County was located on lots 156 and 172 of the 12th Land District. Isham Smith had purchased most of those two lots in 1829 and 1830. Soon thereafter, Ransom Friar married Arpie WHEELER Smith, the widow of Isham (who probably died in 1831). The land remained in Arpie's hands after Ransom died in 1867, and she consigned it to their son, William Harris Friar, in 1875. He died in 1928 and his widow, Viola PHILLIPS Friar Littleton, disposed of the land. She sold what remained to the U. S. government in 1936, and the land is now part of the Chattooga District of the Chattahoochee National Forest.
Lot 172 is located just south of Davidson Creek about 1 1/2 - 2 miles ESE of Hollywood in Habersham County not far from the Stephens County border. Pumping Station Road (187) runs from Black Mountain Road to what appears to be a large pond on Davidson Creek that touched bottom land of lot 172. I suspect that the farm was near the pond or on a smaller creek that feeds the pond from the south.
The official Forest Service map of this part of Chattahoochee National Forest is overlaid on the original Land District map, and the original lot lines are drawn in on the map, as well as some of the lot numbers (a more complete map of lots with numbers is available at the Clarkesville library). The pattern of lots (but without numbers), creeks, and roads can be seen on http://www.fs.fed.us/conf/maps/chattooga-river.pdf. Lots 156 and 172 are due north of Chopped Oak Church.
Has anyone exploring this part of the forest ever seen any ruins of a farm? I would be very grateful for any word about the ruins of the family farm.
