Laura Hewitt, born 1857 in Gordon County, GA

Laura’s death certificate stated Laura was born 12 May 1857 in Gordon County, Georgia. Her death certificate is difficult to read, but it appears to say her father was L. or S. Hewitt. Her mother’s name was not given.
After carefully examining census records and other sources, it appears that
Laura Hewitt was quite probably the illegitimate child of Cassander/Cassy Hewitt.

In the 1860 Census, Gordon County, Georgia, Laura Hewitt was listed in the household of James Hewitt and his wife, Elizabeth along with their daughters, Cassander/Cassy and Catherine. Another child, George W. Hewitt was also listed who was born abt. 1845, but he possibly could have been the son of Landon/Landy Hewitt, or he may have also been an illegitimate child from one of James Hewitt’s daughters. It is uncertain, and no one has been able to verify the parents of George W. Hewitt. Both George W. and Laura could NOT have been the children of James Hewitt’s wife, Elizabeth. Elizabeth was born abt. 1793.

Cassander Hewitt had these brothers: Landon/Landy; William B.; Allen; Caleb

Laura Hewitt could not have been the daughter of Landon/Landy Hewitt. His wife died 20 July 1855 in Spartanburg, SC. (Laura Hewitt was born 1857.)
Laura could not have been the daughter of William Hewitt because he had a child, Francis born in 1857 in Gordon County, Georgia. (Source: 1860 Census, Gordon County, GA) William Hewitt’s widow was listed with her children. William died prior to 5 July 1860.
Allen Hewitt had Zachariah, born 1858, and Francis, born 1859. (Source: 1860 Census, Gordon County, GA)
Caleb Hewitt had Permelia Jane, born 1856 and Young Hewitt, born 1859. (Source: 1860 Census, Gordon County, GA)
It seems very unlikely that Laura Hewitt could have been the daughter of any male child of James Hewitt and his wife, Elizabeth. The most likely candidate for Laura’s mother was Cassander/Cassy Hewitt, who took Laura Hewitt from the state of Georgia and settled in Missouri and Illinois.
