First Families Project

The purpose of this First Families program is to honor the pioneering families that settled the Gilmer County area and are listed on the 1840 census records or before. Applicants are not required to be living in Gilmer County currently but they must show proof of their ancestor having lived in Gilmer County either being on the 1840 census, having received a land lot in Gilmer and proof of property deed and that they paid taxes on that property, or any other suitable means of primary source documentation stating they lived in the county.

Hearsay such as a book written about the family is not admissible unless primary source information is included.

If you think you would like to participate you can email me direct for a copy of the application forms.
