James E. and Mary P. Jarrett of NC, Gilmer and Cass Counties GA, Cherokee Co. AL (Cedar Bluff), and Shelby Co. AL (Sterrett region).
Trying to establish if James E. Jarrett born in North Carolina ca 1830 who was living in Gilmer Co. GA in 1849, then Cass County, GA when 1850 census was taken is same James E. Jarrett who moved with wife Mary P. and daughter Sarah to Cedar Bluff, Cherokee Co., AL by 1852. Cedar Bluff Baptist Church minutes show J. E. and wife Mary P. Jarrett were members of the church by 1857 and didn't leave until late 1860 (letter of dismission granted Nov. 17, 1860). A land patent for 40 acres issued to James E. Jarrett in Shelby County Alabama 1861/07/01. Records show they went there.

While in Cherokee Co AL the family was enumerated in U.S. Census as follows:
2nd District, P.O. Centre, June 25, page 31, #213
J. E. Jarrett 31 Farmer RE--- PE 738, NC
Mary P. 33 NC
Sarah E. 7 [looks like 7] GA
Robert H. 8 ALA
Catharine M. 2 ALA

Compare to 1850 Census of Cass Co. GA
James E. Jarrett 20 NC Farmer
Mary " 21 NC
Sarah A. " 10/12 Geo. (her middle initial was "E." in 1860 census, and age 7 instead of 10 or 11)

1870 Census of Shelby County, AL, P.O. Hillsboro, #905
Mary Jarrot [sic] 38 RE 300, Ala
Robert 15 Ala
Katy 12 Ala
John 7 Ala
William 3 Ala
(note various inconsistencies - and James E. not listed as head of household)

1880 Shelby Co AL, p. 330, #63
Mary [or May] P. Jarrett, 51, Widow, NC NC NC

(following Mary Jarrett was #64
Robert Jarrett 28 farmer Ala NC NC
Louisa J. 21 wife Ala Ala GA
William T. 4 son Ala Ala Ala
James L. 1 son Ala Ala Ala

Where was James E. Jarrett when 1870 Census was taken? Birth of daughter Lula V. Jarrett Apr. 1872 (per 1900 US Census) means he was still alive as late as 1871.

A marriage record index for Shelby County AL shows a marriage on Apr. 29, 1883 of groom name transcribed as "Janett, Robert J." and bride as M. C. White. In the 1900 Shelby Co AL census Robert H. Jarrett was enumerated with a wife named Millie C. [M. C. White?] as follows:
1900 Shelby Co AL Township 18, Sterrett precinct, Sterrett town, p. 248 B, #278/281
Robert H. Jarrett Dec. 1851, 48, Ga Ga Ga, farmer owns farm

Cora B. dtr July 1890 9 Ala Ga Ala

(Note birthplace of children's father given as Ga instead of Ala, obvious error)

Catherine M. Jarrett dtr. of James E. and Mary P. Jarrett married a Neal, probably W. H. Neal. He died Dec. 26, 1915 in Jefferson Co. AL. In 190 Catherine M. Neal age 61 was living in the household of her sister and brother in law, Lula V. and John W.(William) Holcomb(3) in Birmingham which is in Jefferson County. Catherine was shown as a widow and her occupation as cateress for a hotel. An Ala. death index showed that Catherine M. Neal died Jun 1929 in Walker County AL. Found a reference to a W. H. Neal who served in the CSA, 10 Regt. Ala. Infantry, Company A, in as private and out as private.

Lula V. Jarrett married John William Holcomb Jan. 16, 1898 Shelby Co AL.

Ala. Death index shows John W. Holcombe died July 7, 1948 in Jefferson Co AL

In the 1910 census for Montgomery Co. AL, Womble town,
James L. Jarrett, 31, md 9 yrs, Al Al Al, manager hardware store
P. May wife 28 md. 9 yrs, 2 born 2 living Arkansas Ark Mo
Clarice A. dtr 8 Ala Ala Ark
Robert R. son 4 Ark Ala Ark
(was this James L. Jarrett the son of Robert H. Jarrett and his first wife Louisa J.?)

John C. Jarrett may have moved to Jefferson Co. AL and may be the man shown in the 1930 census, age 67, born Ala., living in Miami, FL, working as a carpenter contractor, boarding with Lelia Howell who had one other boarder, named Walter Boley also a carpenter born in Ala.
A Florida Death Index showed that a John C. Jarrett died in Miami in 1932.

An index of newspaper obituaries for Shelby County AL included the following:
Mary Jarrett Feb 14, 1895 (was this Mary P. Jarrett, widow of James E. Jarrett?)
Millie Jarrett Dec 28 1933 (second wife of Robert H. Jarrett?)
Mr. J. W. Jarrett, Nov. 27, 1902 - Who was this? Note that there was a John W. Jarrett who served as Private in CSA, Co. E, 19th Ala. Infantry, "The Cherokee Guards" from Cherokee County, Alabama - the county where James E. Jarrett and family lived as early as probably 1852 (son Robert H. Jarrett born about 1852 in Alabama).
Someone submitted the name of James E. Jarrett to the IGI and gave the name of his father as John Jarrett of Cherokee Co AL who was born in SC. I don't see anything offered as substantiation of the connection between James E. Jarrett and this John Jarrett except that they were the only two Jarrett heads of household listed in the county in the 1860 US Census.
The Cedar Bluff Baptist Church (Cherokee Co, AL) records don't show the name of any Jarrett members except J. E. and wife Mary P. Jarrett.
It is possible that the families are linked, but I think probably just coincidence they lived in same county.

Here is the 1860 US Census listing for the John Jarrett in Cherokee County AL:
2nd District, p. 52, #368
John Jarrett 54 Farmer RE-- PE 227, born SC
Sarah A. 36 SC [wife? dtr.? second wife??]
William 21 Ga
John W. 18 Ga [probably served CSA Co. E, 19th Ala Inf., Cherokee Guards]
Richard C. 16 Ga
Zachariah T. 14 Ga
Elizabeth A. 11 Ga
Alexr. G. 9 Ga
(followed by #369)
Henry Jarrett 24 farmer PE 164 Ga
Caroline 20 Ala
Lucinda 1 Ala

Since there was a James E. Jarrett in Gilmer Co. GA who purchased the farm at auction of Daniel Jarrett Sr. in 1849, and both were from NC (Daniel returned about 1854 to Buncombe Co. NC with wife Winnafred); and since in 1850 James E. Jarrett was in Cass County GA and only other Jarrett there then was Daniel Jarrett and wife Winnafred living in household of Powell family (Daniel's dtr. Mary Smith and her husband Wm. Smith and their children also living in Cass Co. Ga then) - I am leaning in the direction of thinking that this James E. Jarrett was the son of Daniel Jarrett Sr. rather than the John Jarrett b. SC living in Cherokee Co AL in 1860. It would have been easy to travel from Cass Co GA to Cedar Bluff in Cherokee Co AL, less than a day's journey.

Any help or insights or even wild guesses about who this James E. Jarrett was would be welcomed.
Thanks,
Happy Greer
