I have been searching for two weeks on a work-related project for information relating to Browns Mill on Browns Mill Rd in South Fulton. I have used our own state archives, the Atlanta History Center, Atlanta Fulton Public Library and several branches, the state's Water Quality people, city directories, the US census, etc. and have collected bits and pieces but still do not have all the info I need. Today I finally found the mill on a map, 1910. From a photo it appears to have been built about 1880 and to have been a water mill used for grinding grain. It was on a creek that flowed NE from Hapeville. The mill was just south of where it now crosses BM Road. It continued to flow (does it still?) across what is NOW the golf course where it joined the South River. What is the name of that creek?
In 1910 the mill land was owned by the Walter R Brown family; he was a bachelor lawyer who lived on S Pryor in Atlanta with several unmarried siblings. In 1920 his widowed sister Frances Brown Chase also lived with him. She had three daughters, I think, who attended one of the Roman Catholic girls schools, probably in Georgia. I have photos of the nuns and girls but cannot identify the school. In the 1920s Walter lived out on his land, called New Canaan Plantation, with his sister. Where did these Browns come from, and did they build and run this mill?
