Debbie, Unfortunately the triva fact you relate about Dr James Darymple Thompson is incorrect. He may have been one of only a few doctors to practice in the South Atlanta area after the Civil War but not during the Civil War. It is a documented fact that Dr.Thompson practiced medicine and operated an Apothecary in Cedartown, GA during the Civil War. It is said that he was in charge of a near by Confederate Hospital, but I have found nothing to support this as fact. My grandfather Samuel Norris Thompson was born in Cedar Town in 1863. The family did not move to the Atlanta area until after the Civil War. The Thompson Family established residence in the area that would eventually be known as East Point after attending a Methodist Camp meeting in the area sometime around 1869. Dr. Thompson received his Medical Credentials after completing Medical School in Macon GA in 1856. The family settled in Cave Springs, Ga the same year where he opened a practice with his future brother-in-law Hope Hull Watts Jr. In 1859 Dr. James D. Thompson would sell his home and medical practice in Cave Springs to Hope Hull Watts and Hope's older half brother George T Watts. George T Watts was also a Doctor who would distiguish himself as a Calvary Officer during the Civil War. The home Dr. James D. Thompson built in Cave Springs is still standing near the end of Love Street and is on Georgia's list of National Historical Structures as the "George T Watts Home". This is the home where your great-grandfather Robert F. Thompson was more than likely born. The Thompson family relocated to Rockmart, GA in early 1860 and to Cedartown, Ga sometime in 1861. They reamined in Cedartown until about 1868. I have copies of Dr. James D Thompson's medical school history in addtion to other documents, deeds etc establishing the families residential history. Sincerely Robert N. Thompson Monticello, Fl Notify Administrator about this message?
