"The first GUNNELS to come to this area of Tennessee was Joseph Daniel and his brother, William Posey Gunnels. They rode in on horseback from Georgia. Both had served in the Georgia Military during the Revolutionary War. Their Father, William Nathan (Gunnels) was a Lieutenant and their Uncle, Daniel Gunnels was a Captain in the same Militia. " from "History & Genealogy of Families in Pickett County, TN" by Pickett County History Book Committee, 1989, page 578
I find record of Joseph selling property in Elbert co. in 1806 after moving to Jackson co. TN. Looking for additional military data on both Joseph and William.
The following found in Elbert co. GA deeds in reference to a William GUNNELS who served from Va.
William Gunnels, late a soldier in first Va. Regt. of light dragoons commanded by Colo. White, appointed Francis Baldwin of Wilkes Co. Ga., my atty. to receive my pay & my land warrant due to me as a soldier from the U.S. or state of Va., 16 Jan. 1793. (signed) William (X) Gunnels Wit Francis Cook, J.P. Power of atty. ack. by Wm Gunnels before Frances Cook, J.P. of Elbert co., same day, Regd. 19 Jan. 1793. (p 113, Elbert co. Ga Deed book A, 1791-1793)
Elbert Co., GA. 16 Jan. 1793, William Gunnels before Frances Cook, J.P. of sd. co. & made oath that he served as a soldier from Mar. 1776 until the end of the war & never received but L10 specie in part of his pay & the balance is due him yet & never gave a power to any person to draw his pay but Francis Baldwin. (signed) William (x) Gunnels. Wit: Frances cook, J.P. (p 115, Elbert co. Ga Deed book A, 1791-1793)
Is this the William Gunnels who moved with Joseph to Jackson co. TN by about 1803/1806.
