Hi Sue,

John A. Sills was in Chattanooga, Hamilton Co, TN in 1880. His wife, Amanda Cox Sills, and their newborn son drown in Dade County in 1879. John then married Matilda Manly. In 1870 John and Amanda are on the Jackson County, AL census. Jackson County is where Peter and Hannah McDonald Sells are buried. They are the grandparents of Stonewall, Peter Newton and James Sells etc. John A. and his son James Harry (Jim) are buried in Hooker at the Church of Christ cemetery. In 1900 Dade County, GA James and Katie Sills Harp live next to James Sells, they are one page from Stonewall Sells. Katie is John A.'s youngest child with Amanda. John and Amanda's first child was named Francis and their second James Harry. I was thinking that the parents of John A. may be James and Francis Sells of Franklin County, TN. John was born from 1845-1852, James and Francis are in the 1850 Franklin County, TN census but don't have any children. In 1872 John and Amanda are in Marshall County, AL. In 1910 Dade County, GA John A. and his son George live next door to Stonewall and James Sells and the Marian Harp family. John died in Dade County, GA in 1918. Do you know if death certificates were issued in Dade County in 1918? I sure would like to see his.

Sue, I just can't help but think these families may be related. In 1910 they all say they were born in GA and their parents were born in GA but in earlier census they say they were born in GA but their parents were born in TN. You would think it would be a simple matter to find John A. Sills parents since he was born around 1850!If his name was really Sells maybe that's why I'm having such a hard time finding him some parents.Ha!

There is a John the correct age in Dade in 1850 but later census he doesn't seem to be my John A. Solomon was his father.

Thanks for writing and if you ever run across anything please let me know.
