For the censuses between 1840 and 1880, you might check Cherokee Co., AL. I think some of Cherokee went to form Etowah. At any rate, they are near each other and I have found a family that was in CHerokee in one census to be in Etowah at the next.
I know nothing about Ira Farmer but I have a family that migrated from Richmond Co., NC to Fayette and then to Cherokee and Etowah. I don't know if this is an established migration pattern but Richmond might be a place to look in NC.
