Millie,
Although it would not be too uncommon for there to be two Phillip Mayfields in the same area at the same time, it would be very coincidental for them to have both married women with such similar names. I am inclined to believe that someone mis-read some of the old script, mis-reading "Dicy" and "Dury", transposing the 1/30 to 1/03, and the 1840 to 1846. This is incredibly easy to do, particularly if you are in a hurry or unfamiliar with the script with which you are working.
In 1840, in the Coweta Co., GA census, there WERE two Phillip Mayfields. But one must have been senior and the other junior. Here is the census info, just in case you don't already have it.... and the census was usually taken in June of the year.

from 1840 Coweta Co., GA census
p. 359
household of Philip MAYFIELD
1m 20-30; 1f 20-30

pg. 361
household of Philip MAYFIELD
1m 70-80; 1f 60-70

next door here was
household of Green WOOD
2m 5-10, 1m 10-15, 1n 40-50; 1f under 5, 1f 10-15, 2f 15-20, and 1f 40-50
[This might be Dicy's family and the elder Mayfields parents of Philip?]

The publication, Coweta Co., GA Marriages 1827 - 1979, shows only one marriage for Phillip MAYFIELD and it is to Dicy Ann Wood 1-30-1846.

Best wishes in your searchings,
Julie O'Neil Perkins
