There are two documents and either one, or both, might have his parent's names.
1. Joe Thompson b. 25 Jan 1885 d. 11 Jan 1968 made application for a Social Security number (Form SS-5). This should have the information. You can obtain a copy of the SS-5 Form from the Social Security Administration. Here's how: Go to http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi. Fill in the search boxes. Use the name Joe and no initials. When the search results come back, find the row with his name, look across to the right column and click "SS-5 Letter" link. The rest is self-explanatory.
2. Order a copy of his death certificate. It contains fields for the informant to give parents names (if known). Here's how: Go to the Georgia Vital Records web page at http://health.state.ga.us/programs/vitalrecords/death.asp for complete details on ordering death certificates including fees and methods of payment. His name is recorded as Joe W. on the death index so that's how the request should be made. You have all the other information needed.
