According to "History of Colquitt County" by W. A. Covington, 1937, Colquitt Co. was named for Walter T. Colquitt, born 1799 in Halifax Co., VA, who, while still a small child, moved to Hancock Co., GA with his family. He studied at Princeton, read law at Milledgeville, GA, was called to the bar in 1820, and commenced the practice of law at Sparta, GA.

His career of service to GA included:
(1) Member of GA State Senate 1835 - 1837
(2) National House of Representatives 1839 - 1840 and 1842- 1843
(3) US Senator 1843 - 1848
(4) A local Methodist minister

He died a few weeks before Colquitt Co. was created in 1856. He was buried in an unmarked grave in the Jeter lot in the Columbus, GA, cemetery.

The book does not give the names of Walter T. Colquitt's parents nor descendants.
