Lewis A. Pilford/Pileford/Piliford

Has anyone come across the name of Lewis A. Pilford (or variation), a free man of colour in Clarke Co. circa 1830?

See deed book O, p. 178 where Jesse Jones sells a tract of land to James C. Anderson and acknwledges recept of the purchase price "the use and benefit of which has been applied to the Interest of Lewis A. Pilford(sp?), a free man of colour." Can anyone explain this?
