I have an ancestor, THOMAS BLAKEMORE, who I locate in Clarke Co, GA, probably 1810-1838. I have been looking at the early Clarke tax digests which include a lot of good info. An interesting article about using them is located at www.houstonlibrary.org/clayton/clf/ga002.html & it says that there is a 5 volume series of Georgia tax digests which covers 1789-1817. I have copied some pages from “Clarke County Georgia Tax Digests 1811-1820” transcribed & published by Mary Hoitt Abbe & Clarke Oconee Genealogical Society in 2005. It contains a map of the Clarke Co districts 1811-1820. In 1820 your John Alexander was on the same page as my Blakemore, Capt Lane’s District, GMD 216 which was Athens. I currently have on loan the LDS film #214560, Clarke Co GA Tax Digest 1819-1832. Although the annual lists are alpha by military district they are a little tedious to study because the film quality isn’t all that great. I see that in 1824 John & Thomas are listed on the same page in Capt Gahagan’s District, neither of them a land owner. It looks like John Alexander owned 1 slave. At the top of the page is scribbled kind of sideways, “Athens”. You might want to order this film if you have access to an LDS facility.
