I'm sorry I didn't see your message sooner. I wish there was a better way of knowing when someone write you back in Genforum. Anyway, there is a little paperback book from 1981 called "Glimpses of Cherokee County" Under the beginning folklore it says: "Until their removal in 1838 the cherokee indians mingled freely with the little hamlet's citizens (Canton)drifting in from CHIEF STILL's village near the High School and the villages at Sixes and on the Brown Farm. Chief STILL rode the children on his shoulders, Cherokee women paid gold nuggets for copies of the white women's lace caps, and drunken indians frequently occupied the small rock jail. If you dig enough under the downing name and some woman named Otter Lifter, I think you will find your family of Still. You are lucky that there is some reference to them really being indian. You will have a rich family history to discover. My best wishes to you.
