According to the book "Images of America Beaufort's Old Burying Ground, NC" (1999), Capt. Matthew R. Gooding wrote his will on the steamship, "Thomas L. Wragg". He died in Jan. 1863, age 32, in Beaufort, NC. The book has a partial picture of his will and a picture of his grave. He had two sons, Herbert b. 1859 and Matthew Wilbur b. 1860. When Matthew wrote his will he had not been paid his wages due; which he refers to in his will. He was later paid, and served on the "Nashville". I bought the book from the Beaufort Historical Society.
