Re: Lane & Hornsby Families

I have a little on the Hornsby family. William James Hornsby and his wife Hulda were my gg-granparents. I thought I had his parents and siblings all figured out (by others) but I've pretty well proved what others have told me about William James' parents is incorrect.

I was told that he was a Junior and that his parents were William James Hornsby Sr. and a Rebecca Gridley.
I now believe that said Rebecca Gridley was a widow named Rebecca Hornsby when she married one John Gridley in 1830.

I'd been told that William James Hornsby Sr. was in Irwin County prior to his death in 1839. I am now convinced but have no proof that there were two Hornsbys in Irwin County. One, I believe, was named James and the other was named William. One, I believe, was married to someone named Rebecca who was born in 1800 in North Carolina. The other's spouse is still unknown.

In comparing the children in the household of Rebecca Hornsby in 1830 and in the children in the household of William Hornsby in 1840, It appears to me that past researchers have been combining two families. I believe that Rebecca's children, Daniel H. and Ezekiel E. who eventually moved to Miller County belong to Rebecca but I think that William who went to Baker County belonged to someone else.
One other thing that I've found wrong with past research is the statement that there was a daughter named Martha Williams Hornsby.

Anyone who examines the handwriting of the census taker who wrote that person's name can quickly see that the lady was named Martha Nillams. No relationship was mentioned. Ezekiel Hornsby's name was written in full. John and Daniel's first names were written followed my ditto marks. There were no ditto marks after the Marha Nillams. Rebecca's name was written as "Rebecca Gridley b. NC" Martha's last name began with a letter written identically to the N in NC. It has been read by previous researchers as a W but the name William several lines up the page begins with a letter that looks nothing like the first letter of Martha's name. Due to the age of Martha, I suspect that she may have been one of Rebecca's grandchildren or an orphaned niece.

I don't know anything about the Lane's except that two of Ezekiel's daughters married Lanes.

I have copies of 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860, and 1870 census records that I'm willing to copy for you if you'd like to see this for yourself.

If you have anything at all that might point to the parentage of William James Hornsby I'd love to hear from you.
- Also, if you have any proof or strong evidence that says that he really is a brother of Ezekiel, Hohn and Daniel I also love to hear from you.
