Merritt Family in Baker County in 1850 Census

I am researching the Merritt families in Baker County, Georgia in the 1850 Census.

I believe that the Stephen and Nancy Merritt (their last name is misspelled as Merrett in the census record) in this census are my great, great grandparents. Stephen lists his birth place as North Carolina only; however, some members of the other Merritt families in the same county and census lists birthplace as Sampson County, North Carolina. Can anyone tell me if Sarah Merritt, David, and other Merritt families in the 1850 census are related to Samuel and Nancy? And, if so, what is the relationship among these families, and does anyone have details about the when and whys of their move from North Carolina to Georgia?

Finally, if there are family connections, I would appreciate any information on Stephen and Nancy Merritt and their descendants and ancestors. Their son F.M. (Francis or Frank) was my great grandfather. His line has proven fairly elusive to date.

Thanks.

Becca (Rebecca Merritt Bichel)
