Fynestown / Fyanstown, Co Meath, Ireland
Hi: Other Fynes/Fyans may be interested in a paper which I googled across in Library Ireland -- R Armstrong, "Ancient Baptismal Font, St Peter's, Drogheda", Dublin Penny Journal, Vol 1, Number 5, May 4 1833.
The paper describes a limestone baptismal font which has two coats of arms, one for the Mildmay family and the other for "the Fynes family of Fynestown Castle near Navan". The date when the church was built is not given, but its steeple was destroyed in a 1548 storm, so presumably the baptismal font was pre-1548.
I never heard of Fynestown before, but after more help from Google, it seems that Fynestown is now called Fyanstown, and it is a few miles east of Kells in Co Meath (also about 10 miles up the road from Tara). It would appear that the property was bought in 1736 by the father of the Marquis of Headfort.
Cromwell "caused the church to be fired", after which it was partially repaired but replaced in 1740 by a new structure. In 1833, at the time of Armstrong's writing, the historic baptismal font was outdoors and being used as an animal feeder. What a shame!Wonder where it is now.
Anyhow, this has given me a link to a Fynes line in Ireland, going back to pre-Cromwell times. The modern day Fyanstown will be of interest to Fyans and Fynes too.
