Furnass/Furness of Morland & Dufton

My Furnass/Furness ancestors were at Kings Meaburn/Burwain in Morland parish, near Appleby, Westmorland, England from at least 1691 to 1860. They were probably a branch of the FURNASS families at nearby Dufton parish who go back to at least the early 1500s. After the family farm at Burwain was sold in 1859 the surviving children of Thomas Furness & wife Margaret Steel (both dead by then) ended up in Kings Meaburn, Shap, Appleby New Zealand, Australia, USA and goodness knows where else. Richard was at Bongate Appleby, George & Sam & John went to Australia & Sam & George went further to New Zealand. Eleanor too went to NZ but seems to have returned to England - she has Burley & Bell descendants at Barrow-in-Furness. Hannah and husband WIlliam Taylor were at Shap & Great Strickland (the Taylors came from Great Strickland). Margaret & her husband Thomas Hodgson, a tailor, were at Shap. Mary Ann may have finished up at Barrow. A daughter of Hannah, Mary Ann, married Seraiah Butler.

cheers everybody, Peter.
