Forget about knowing exact details from Ireland, but is there any family stories at all, like why they left of how they left or were they related to anyone else you can cross reference.
you may be surprised where this can lead. Whilst a lot of people don't use oral history you may be really surprised how accurate it is as people are often honest when it comes to such info.
The other thing you may be able to look at is Criminal records. This may sound something you may not wish to dig into but they are one of the best sources of information.
You could also try a google search of the name and area in Australia tey settled.
There are also shoipping records for NZ which are really easy to access.
I believe we may be related to some other Furlongs in NZ that is why I took this long shot.
