One of my ancestors also claimed to be a 'cousin' of Gen. Frederick Funston. My ancestor, Thomas Aten FUNSTON's obit reads; Funeral Services were held in the Methodist church here last week for Thomas Benton Funston, 91, who died at the home of his son, Scott Funston, in Portland on Dec 19. He was a cousin of General Funston, Commander of the Expeditionary force in Mexico just prior to the first World War. Mr. Funston had lived on a farm near Turner for many years. Interment was in the Pioneer Pleasant Grove cem."
(Source, Portland Oregonian; 30 Dec 1940 Sec. 3, p3. and Portland Oregonian; 21 Dec 1940, p9 and Oregon Journal, 22 Dec 1940 section 1, p. 10)
He was a descendant of John and Mary (Aten) Funston. Thomas Benton FUNSTON was a 'hero' in his own rights...without mentioning Gen. Frederick he was a Washington and Oregon state early pioneer.
