Hello Edsel,
I don't have much info on the Funston family before George. I do know his parents were William Funston and Margaret McVitty and that they are buried in Amberson Union Cemetery. When my father was little he would go with his mom and grandmother (Ella Sallade nee Funston) to a farm in Amberson Valley. He doesn't remember the name of the people they were visiting. My dad has a few old letters that Ella's sister Nana and brother Roy had sent her from the early 1900s. He also has an old picture album. It is small about 4 inches by 4 inches and is in bad shape. The pictures look like they are from the 1800s. We believe they are of Ella's family because the pictures were taken at photo shops in Shippensburg and Chambersburg. Only two of the photos are named. One is George Hunsberger. The other has faded writing. It looks like N.M. Funston age 21 yrs June 1870.

George T. Funston married Sarah Elizabeth Fenstermacher abt. 1877. She was the daughter of William Fenstermacher and Maria Kreider. Her father was a Coachmaker and I believe that is where George Funston learned his trade.

George and Sarah Funston lived in Shippensburg and about 1901 moved to Reading PA. According to the 1900 census they had 8 children but only 6 were living. I don't know the names of the children that died.

Edith May Funston b. abt 1877 married 1st a man last name Anney. They had a child named Edward b. Jun 1896. Edith divorced July 6 1903. She then married Edgar A. DeWalt Sept 28 1903 at Reading, PA. They had a child named Edgar.

Nana Alberta Funston b. Aug 17 1879 Shippensburg and d. Aug 17 1941 Cleveland OH. She married Harry Gussman
March 25 1911 Reading, PA. They had a daughter Edith.

Florence E. Funston b. Jun 1882 Shippensburg d. Jun 25 1916 Detroit, MI. She married Robert Summons Sep 2 1902 Reading, PA. They had children Margaret, Catharine, and Chester.

Mabel P. Funston b. Mar 1883 and d. ?. I believe she married twice to a Jenkinson and to a Ed Miller. I don't have much info on her. Info about Ed Miller is from an old letter.

Roy Fenstermacher Funston b. Sep 19 1885 Shippensburg d. May 20 1964 Calaveras, CA. He married Mamie DeWitt Aug 27 1927 Calaveras Co., CA. They had no children.

Ella Rose Funston b. Jun 21 1886 Shippensburg d. Dec 5 1965 Reading PA. She married Herbert Ellsworth Sallade Jun 2 1904. They had Thurman F., George A. died young, Daisy Mildred, and Elizabeth Mary (my grandmother).

Ella's husband Herbert was a 40 year serviceman. He was in the Army before WWI and then served in the the First Division in France during WWI. He reenlisted in 1935 in the Air Corps and was at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese bombed. He served a total of 19 years overseas in Panama, France, Hawaii, and the Phillipines. Ella and Herbert must have separated at some point. They never did divorce and are buried together at Charles Evans Cemetery in Reading. I'm not really not sure of all the details. I know my grandmother and her sister went to live in an orphanage and my father never new his grandfather. As far as my dad can remember Ella was always living with Howard Williams but they were never married.

I came across a George Funston in the 1820 census living in Shippensburg. I don't know if he is any relation to our Funstons.

Could you provide some info on George T. Funston's siblings. Does the family bible give any dates? Also would it be possible to get copies of George and Sarah's obits? Here is my email
