Earliest document yet of FUNKHOUSER in VA found!
Sandra Yelton of Thomasville, NC has been going through the microfilm of very early Orange County, Virginia records, particularly the old bundles of old miscellaneous papers that have never been properly catalogued or indexed. She found a debt bond, dated December 11, 1736, in which Christian Funkhouser co-signed and witnessed the note for Jacob Funk.It was also witnessed by John Funk and John Funk Jr. the note itself is a printed form with names and terms written in. It states:
"The Condition of this obligation is such thatt the above bounden Jacob Funk or Christian Funk Hauser or either of them or their heirs, Executors or Administrators do well and truly pay or cause to be paid unto the Above named Roger Hunt certain attorney, Executors, Administrators or Assigns the just and full sum of Five Pounds fourteen shillings Current lawful money on or before the first day of November next [etc]
signed by John FunkJacob Funk (seal)
John Funk JrChr'ian Fankhuser (seal)
There was a paper note attached which said Christian Funkhouser witness in the man's home as evidence of the bill December 11, 1736.
Jacob and John Funk were both in the area of present-day Strasburg, Virginia by 1735. It must be remembered that at that time this was still part of Orange County Virginia. The earliest previously known record of the Funkhousers in Virginia was a road petition drawn up in July 1737 and signed by Johannes, Jacob and Christian Fankhauser. This new document would indicate that they had arrived in the summer of 1736.
