Funderburk Family Genealogy Forum

The recent death of my grandmother has rekindled the desire to know more about my ancestors. What I know is very little, that roughly 300 years ago a Funderburk came from England. He supposedly fell off the ship he was in and was rescued by another ship, but did not have the funds to pay his way. He was sold into slavery and later, when free he married a Cherokee woman. They moved to Tennessee and settled there. This is the story that has been passed down, though it is not documented anywhere that I can find. Supposedly several years ago a member of the family wrote Washington in attempt to find out where in Tennessee the property was that this Funderburk owned. The relative was told that the land was now under water (what luck!)
I've tried to trace from my Grandma back and I get no further than William Vinyard Faris who was married to Parmelia Harrington and died in 1879.
Any help would be appreciated.
