Dear Janice, I grew up having to explain the spelling or sounding of my "Trammell" name as well. It was a source of irritation until I was 9 years old and began genealogy. Now I have a whole different perspective on it. It is a clue to how people hear the name and from that how they might derive a variant spelling, which is good for you when you are tracking your family. Names derive for many reasons to their present form in each generation. Usually the more educated, the better the printed translation. I am grateful for the few who were able to write at all for setting it down. I decided a long time ago to not uneducate myself by writing each and every variation I find. I add the variations in a group and keep one spelling for all the editing. Works for me. Barbara
