I found an Elizabeth married to Reverend Charles A. Fulwood in Houston County. She may have been a Howell because in the 1850 Georgia census there is a Sarah Howell living with an Elizabeth Fulwood. I suspect Sarah Howell (b. abt. 1838) was perhaps this Elizabeth's younger sister. Charles isn't listed (perhaps because he was in fact a traveling Methodist preacher and may not have been around when the1850 census was taken).
Charles' older brother Johnathan was married to a Maryann (Last Name Unknown) who was born about 1805. They had a daughter named Maryann E. Fulwood born sometime before 1843. When her parents died in 43 she and her siblings were raised by their grandfather Reverend John Fulwood until he died in in 1850. Their uncle the Methodist Reverend Charles Allen Fulwood was then granted custody of his brother Johnathan's children.
Perhaps Maryann and Elizabeth (with teen sister Sarah) were both Howell sisters who married Fulwood brothers.
Perhaps the younger Maryann E. Fulwood married a James Howell not in 1842 as you suggest but after her parents died. I found records for all the children up to 1858 except Maryann E. The last record of her is on 7 July 1851 when Charles took custody. Maybe she married after 51.
Speculation I know, but it was the best I could come up with. We do know now though that the Howells and Fulwoods of Houston County were probably connected.
