The Patsy Marcum shown on the 1850 Russell Co. Census was the mother of the children shown. The father of those children was William Handshaw Palmer who was never married to Patsy. He married Sarah Jane Fields in 1849 and their first child was named Zachariah Fugate Palmer.Sarah Jane Fields was the daughter of Rebecca Spurgeon Fugate who was the child of Zachariah Fugate and his first wife.I've been unable to find the first wife's name of Zachariah Fugate (she was possibly a Spurgeon) and, like you, wonder about the nature of the attachment with Sarah Manerva Marcum.I think she is the mother of Patsy.I also think Patsy's real name was Martha and she possibly later married John Dorton but have just started my search on THOSE theories.William Handshaw Palmer's will mentions the children who originally resided in Zachariah's household. William Handshaw Palmer was my gggrandfather.
Incidentally, Sarah Jane Fields Palmer died early in childbirth and her burial site is the biggest mystery in my family's genealogy search. She died in Big Moccasin Creek, Russell County, and if anyone knows where she's buried, please inform me.
