I suspect that someone has put together the known information about Mary and the general known information about the "blue" families to come up with one possibility for Mary's ancestry.
It certainly appears from the known facts that it was Mary (along with some of the Smith family members) who was the source of the "Blue Fugates".She married Martin back in southwest Virginiaaround 1800, where many of the settlers intermarried with the native American people already there. Her surname has never been proved.
Add this to the known data on the "blue" trait which is more common among native Americans, and your get the possibility that Mary was native American, and, given the location, Cherokee.
Add to that the interest many people have in proving that their families were "Indian" and also "Blue", and you get lots of conjecture.
As with any other un-documented genealogical statements, a family researcher should demand "evidence" for anything that applies to their family.Otherwise we are in danger of "climbing the wrong tree".Thank you for attempting to do so.
