Probably, since both those locations were places where Huguenots settled from France, and the spellings were anything that sounded right.Nobody has done any more than guess, however.Almost every Fugate family in this country has the tradition that they are descended from Huguenots, but there is no documentation so far to prove it.
Earliest "Fugates" were Peter of Baltimore Co. MD ca 1661, who called his land "Frenchman's Plantation", and James, who said in his marriage record that he was the son of "James and Em of Old England".His christening record seems to be the one in St. Dunstan's Church, Stepney, and his father is recorded in the church record as "of Yarmouth in ye Isle of Wighte, mariner" at his marriage in 1651, "of Greenbanks, mariner" in 1652, and of ___street, mariner" in 1653.
The English IGI shows all variations of the spelling of what looks like the same name.
Since we haven't followed most of the lines in this country back reliably to either immigrant, there seems to be no particular reason to try to "cross the ocean" yet.!
