The documentation used for the DAR application was as follows:
1) Gwathmey, John H. "Historical Register of Virginians in the Revolution," pgs 280 and 291.; and
2) Bounty Land Claim Affidavit made in Cumberland Co. Ky, 1831 --
Notes by reviewer of this application:
"His claim was rejected, reasons not stated. His affidavit states he served under Capt. Thomas Smith, Col. Samuel Lewis and was discharged a few days before Cornwallis' defeat or surrender.Augusta County Records show Thomas Smith was a Capt. by Aug 19, 1777 (Scoth-Irish Chronicles, Chalkley, Vol. 1p. 193), and Augusta Co. Recs. show Lt. Col. Samuel Lewis as "commanding" in entries dated Oct. 10-12, 1781. (VA in the Rev, Gwathmey, p. 47)Therefore, not only can the service of the officers in the bounty land application be verified, the dates shown for Col. Samuel Lewis in Augusta Co. are just before the British surrender at Yorktown, which also corroborates the affidavit for bounty land."
Please check previous message for the Affidavit for Bounty Land.
