Ask your parents, grandparents or great-grandparents who their grandparents were, where they were born, when they were born. No mater if you are Portugese, Norwegian or Chinese, you start with what you know and work backwards.

http://www.tedpack.org/begingen.html
has some tips for beginners, but they are aimed at people in the USA. Some of them will help you, some will not.
