Way back(late 1600s) my ancestor, Heinrich Frey, from Swiss extraction, came to America from the area of Alsase in what is now Germany. He had a couple of sons who traveled from Bethlehem PA down through the Shenandoah Valley to VA, into Ky and Tenn and also into SW PA. Ben married into the Spears family. These two changed their last names to Frye. Don't know why. Others kept the Frey spelling. It is interesting that I have a legal document from the early part of this century that includes all three spellings for the siblings. Switzerland is loaded with Freys and Freis but none of the other two spellings.
