JOSHUA FRY, Col. Chiswell, Robert Rose, John Harvie
I am quoting a portion of the Amherst County History. I am particularly interested in any information about Col. Fry's mining adventures both in Amherst or elsewhere or any other possible ties to Col. Chiswell, Robert Rose or John Harvie:
Amherst Co. Virginia
"A New History of Amherst County, Virginia" by Sherrie S. McLeRoy and Wm. McLeRoy Hertiage Books
Chapter titled Riches of the Earth
Tobacco was not the only cash crop to be wrested from the earth of old Amherst. Extensive copper deposits in The Glades area along Buffalo Ridge attracted Colonel John Chiswell of Williamsburg. Born in Scotland, Chiswell had acquired 30,000 acres on the Rockfish River by 1739 and another 10,000 on Buffalo Ridge which he apparently bought from John (or James) Warren in 1749. Near the later site of "The Folly" (a tavern and cockpit), he and his partners, Robert Rose, Joshua Fry, and JOHN HARVIE, sank two shafts (75 and 47 feet deep) but had continuous problems with water, which resulted in a cave in and the deaths of several miners.
