It is believed by some Mennonite name researchers that "von Riesen" derives from "van Rijssen". Rijssen is a village in Overijssel in the Netherlands. When one of the immigrants arrived in West Prussia, he probably said "Ich bin van Rijssen" and "van Rijssen" became his last name, as the Iron Chancellor of Prussia was "Paul von Hindenburg."
