Fries Family in Chicago area

My paternal grandmother's name was Edith Fries (maiden) My father's name was Grant Fries McLaren. My grandmother's siblings were named, as best as I can recollect, Arthur, Walter, Helen and Thomas. Her father came from somewhere in Germany and he married an English woman (I can't remember her name) My great-grandfather was a coachman for a prominent judge's family in the Chicago area. My grandmother was born in 1898. She married a Canadian-born Scotsman by the name of Gordon McLaren from the Toronto area. I've always wondered if the Fries name is Hebrew??? There are some features of my late grandmother's and my late father's and my uncles and great-uncles (and myself) that have made me wonder for quite awhile if we could perhaps be part Jewish. I would love to know! If we are, nothing was ever said about it. I would just like to know more about my heritage. Thank you! Ruth
