Friends of McDonald County Missouri
Posted by: Michael Hailey (ID *****8884) Date: April 14, 2011 at 08:23:20
  of 1604

My great, great grandfather, Daniel McColley, married Mary Friend in the home of Jesse Friend in 1851 McDonald County Missouri. After reading over this forum and the ancestry lists at WorldConnect. I believe that this Friend line was from Northern Ohio.

Would appreciate help from anyone who will read this to see if we could make that link.

Note: Greene County would be the parent county of McDonald and Newton County Missouri.

From Goodspeed’s
“History of Newton County Missouri”
Judge John Reed’s house, named in the act establishing the county, stood one and one-half miles east of the town of Neosho. The commissioners subsequently located the seat of justice on Hickory Creek, and named the spot Neosho or Clear Water.

Circuit Court Proceedings.—The first session of the circuit court was opened by Judge Foster P. Wright at John Reed’s house, July 22, 1839. Issac Gilson was sheriff, and Thomas Moseley clerk. Ex-Judge Charles H. Allen, commonly called “Hoss Allen” on account of the horse-power used in enforcing order, Littlebury Hendricks, Robert Crawford, John S. Phelps and Charles S. Yancy were the attorneys.

John Gunther vs. Augustus J. Friend
The first indictment returned was against Augustus J. Friend, Sr., William Friend, Charles Butler, Augustus J. Friend, Jr., William Wells, Nicholas Friend, Andrew Friend and Jonathan Wells, for “house-burning.”

From Goodspeed’s
“History of McDonald County Missouri”
Abraham Testerman and wife. Margery Buzzard, said to be the first persons married in what is now McDonald County, came in 1833. . .About 1837 Abram married and took his wife to his log-house, five miles northwest of Pineville, where Galbraith’s mill is on Indian Creek now is. Abram died after the war commenced, and Margery died in January, 1888. At the time of his settlement, the Friends, the Matthews and other settlelrs were here on or before 1833; but it is said the Friends were here much earlier, and had made a little improvement on what is now the Langley Farm about 1830. They turned their stock into the wild cane brake, and found in the forest deer and all others kinds of game.

The Friend family, the earliest settlers of McDonald County, resided here until 1842 or 1843, when the name disappears [not true that it disappears-MH]. Augustus Friend sold the Marshall farm to Jacob Wallace, whose widow sold to Marshall. There now is a post-office known as Noel.

The Matthews family, some ten in number, were the most useless of citizens who ever came here. They lived on game, which was plenty, refused to work, and , it is said, any one of them could follow a turkey’s track inthe night. They were here prior to 1839.

The Hermit of McDonald County, Edward T. Matthews, better known as “Bone Cave Matthews,” resided in 1871-1872 in a cleft in the cliff, three miles south of Pineville. After the war he lived with his family in this county but failed to provided them with the necessaries of life. He was charged with incest, but acquitted, and then moved to Barry County, where he was convicted of the crime. He served three-fourths of his term in the State Prison. On returning his family refused to receive him, and moving into McDonald adopted this strange mode of living rather than work.
