Searching for information about the Wilhelm Friedrich family. Wilhelm (William) Friedrich was born in Germany about 1823. In 1847 he was part of the Bettina colony on the Llano River in Texas. In 1849 he and four other men settled near present day town of Boerne, Texas. They called their farm, "Tusculum". Mr. Friedrich eventually purchased a large tract of land in that area. In the 1850 Census, he is residing in Comal County, Texas and is 28 years old. In December 1859 he and his nephews, Carl and Conrad Adam signed a petition for the creation of a new county out of parts of Bexar, Comal, and Blanco. This new county became Kendall County, Texas.
On February 18, 1860 Wilhelm Friedrich married Alice Andre' at St. Mary's Catholic Church in San Antonio, Texas. They are listed on the 1860 U.S. Census in Bexar County, Texas. His age is given as 37 and he is listed as a surveyor. At the beginning of the Civil War, Friedrichs started up a gun powder factory. So many other gun powder factories had sprung up, that he was in financial trouble. He tried converting his factory to a blasting powder factory to help in the construction work that would surely follow after the Civil War. In 1867, he was temporarily residing with Dr. Herff. In 1868, an explosiion took place at the factory. Thirteen of his workmen were instantly killed. Friedrichs himself was burned over 80% of his body. Dr. Herff took care of him for three days, but Friedrichs died.
Some sources say that Friedrichs and his wife were childless but in the Kendall County records, Case # 51, there are several references to the Friedrich Minors: Alice Louise Friedrichs and Charlotte Matilde Friedrichs in connection with guardian Alice Block of New Orleans, Louisiana. Are these two girls daughters?? Did Alice Andre' Friedrichs remarry?
