FREW/RHODES RECORDS FROM MARYLAND (Genforum posting of 6FEB2012)
Adam and Casey, two researchers posting to the Rhodes surname genforum, recently discussed a Frew marriage to a Rhodes and a land record document naming a Frew and Rhodes. The marriage record info follows: Elisabeth Roads married Alexander 'Trew' on Apr 5, 1782, witness, Thomas Hinton, Philip Hinton, Reason Williams, John Roads. This record is from the Frederick Evangelical Lutheran Church. (Casey also mentioned another marriage, from the same church, where a Jacob Roads married Ann Cash, Apr 23, 1780, witnessed by Edward Pusey, Charles Pusey, Samuel Pusey, John Roads, Elisabeth Cash.) Then Adam mentioned the 1800 Montgomery County census, where Alexander Frew & family live next door to John Roads, Archibald Cecil, Ann Cash, etc., see Montgomery County District 1, Ancestry.com Image 6 of 13. These three records seem to tie all these folks together as possible neighbors/friends/relatives. It is thought that all these folks resided in the general area of Hyattstown, MD, which spans the Frederick/Montgomery County line. Also, in the 1800 Montgomery County census, Nicholas Roads is found in District 2, Ancestry.com image 4 of 8.

The ‘land’ record, mentioned by Adam, turned out to be a deed of gift of a heifer and ‘abstracted’ info follows:
SUMMARY - Nicholas Rhodes to Elizabeth Frew Junior, April 13, 1797
Recorded in Book G, Page 474, Montgomery County, Maryland , April 15, 1797, “At the request of Elizabeth Frew” [perhaps this Elizabeth was the mother of (or person responsible for) Elizabeth Frew Junior, assuming that the word Junior is used here to indicate that Elizabeth was not yet of ‘legal’ age].
"Deed of Gift", One heifer and her produce.
Nicholas Rhodes signed with a full signature.
Witnesses: James M Nathan & John James (with his mark).
Note again that the document was recorded "At the request of Elizabeth Frew" (no "Junior" for this one who did "request" the recording).
The reason for the gift is stated as follows: "Nicholas Rhodes of Montgomery County and State of Maryland Blacksmith " ... "for and in consideration of the love and God will and affection which I have and do bear towards Elizabeth Frew Junior of the aforesaid County [Montgomery]". (The designation "Junior", following “Elizabeth Frew”, is stated 4 times in the document, in fact, every time she is mentioned by Nicholas, he uses the word “Junior”).
(The clarification that this Nicholas Rhodes was a blacksmith tends to confirm that this is the same Nicholas Rhoades who served as "Ferrier" during the latter part of the Revolutionary War under Light Horse Harry Lee; per his Pension File. I seem to recall another record where it is stated that he was a blacksmith) (And this must be the same Nicholas sometimes referred to as Jr, born 1761, son of Nicholas Rhoades, Sr., brother of John and Elisha; Nicholas Jr. later moved to near Clifton, Ohio, where he died around 1829 and was buried at the Clifton cemetery.) (Reference Casey Stafford's Lutheran Church record where Elizabeth Rhoades marries Alexander "Trew" in 1782, so this looks like this Elizabeth Frew Junior could possibly be a niece (or other close relative) of Nicholas Rhodes) (The witnesses to this deed could possibly be candidates for neighbors, friends or relatives.) (It is also interesting that Elizabeth Frew requested the recording of the document - in those days it seems that the man of the house would go to the court house for these chores, where was Alexander in 1797? Of course, this question assumes that the Elizabeth Frew recording the Deed of Gift is the same Elizabeth who married a certain Alexander Frew in 1782.)

So now all of the above is being posted to the Frew surname genforum, hoping that someone will have additional info about the folks mentioned and will share that info.
