The Alexander Frew listed in the 1790 Federal census for Cecil Co., Maryland is not the same Alexander Frew that is later listed in the 1800 Federal census in Montgomery County, Maryland.
The Alexander Frew in the 1790 Federal census in Cecil County, MD arrived in the Colonies in 1774 with two brothers and two sisters. They were formerly of Randalstown, County Antrim, Ireland. Oral family history relates that the family was from Glasgow, Scotland and had spent one generation in Ulster before going to Baltimore, Maryland. A problem with that story is that there is a 80 plus year history of a Frew family in Randalstown and probate indexes that indicate that a mill lease on the Maine River from the O'Neill family was passed by Last Will and Testament at least twice from Frew father to Frew son from the 1690s through the 1730s. A late nineteenth century family history indicates that the oldest of the three immigrant brothers ran a mill in Randalstown with his father prior to sailing to the Colonies with his family and siblings. The author of the family history with that information grew up across the road from his grandfather, who was the last Frew born in Ireland prior to the family migration. Fortunately, I have three written family histories for my "Randalstown Frews" from the nineteenth century that have been extraordinarily helpful.
The Alexander Frew in the 1790 census in Cecil County was born in 1737 and would have been 63 years old in 1800, and his wife would have been 56 years old. The Alexander Frew, and his apparent wife, in the 1800 Montgomery Co. census were indicated to be between 26 and 44 years of age, plus the family make-up and age profile does not fit that of the Alexander Frew (b. 1737).
The Alexander Frew (b. 1737) is listed in the preserved 1790 Cecil County tax list, but is not listed in the 1791 tax list. Alexander was one of many Cecil County inhabitants that moved west of the Allegheny Mountains in the 1790s. By 1799 he and two of his three sons had each purchased 200 acres of land close to each other in what is now Slippery Rock Township, Lawrence Co., Pennsylvania and they are listed in the 1800 federal census for Beaver Co., PA.. At this moment I have no idea what may have happened to the other Alexander Frew noted in the 1800 Montgomery Co., MD census. Two hundred years ago the most common Frew given names seem to have been John, James and Alexander, so one needs to look at these folks with common given names rather closely.
At the time of the Revolutionary War there seems to have been at least seven separate Frew families in the Colonies from New Hampshire to Georgia. When did a Nancy Frew marry a George Keen in Pearl River, Louisiana? What is your connection to the Frews?
