First question is where in Germany was your ancestor born? OR where did they come from? IF you have any clue as to where they came into the country it is possible to get a copy of their immigration records from the national archives. You might get a clue on this by checking ships passenger lists which are available on line in many cases.
Ours came from a place which was sometimes Germany, and sometimes France, depending on who won the last border skirmish!!!
