Greetings! I am searching for information on my French Family. Please take a look and see if any of this looks familiar to you! John C. French was born around 1791 in South Carolina. His first definite record appears in the 1840 Jackson, AL census (as Jno C. French). In this census, it lists his children but no wife is listed. With 4 girls listed under 5 years old, I theorize his wife must have died 1839/1840 in Jackson county. Also listed on the 1840 Jackson, AL census is a Sarah Potter (b. 1790-1800), listed just below Jonathan Potter (whom I believe is her brother-in-law). She is also apparently widowed, with her husband dying between 1835 and 1839). In the 1850 census of DeKalb county, AL, we find John C. French with children Judah, Margarette, and Martha (William B. and Josiah had already moved out of the home). It also lists three other minors: Reuben Potter, Jesse Potter, and David Potter. If the widow Sarah Potter is the woman listed as John's wife in 1850 (Sarah, b. 1799-1800, NC), then the Potter children listed in the census would be John's STEP-CHILDREN. This would also include Elizabeth C. Potter who had married William B. French by 1850. If anyone has any information that would help clear up these lines (such as marriage records for John C. French and Sarah Potter, 1840-1850, Jackson/DeKalb, AL; the name of John's first wife; Sarah's maiden name; Sarah's husband's name (?) Potter, etc.) please contact me. My email address is travisself@cox.net, and I would love to hear from you! Thanks! Sincerely, Travis Self Notify Administrator about this message?
