FRENCH Page 695, Macon county Illinois, Year 1893 Mr. French is one of the worthy citizens that New Hampshire has furnished to Illinois. He was born in Merrimack County, of the Granite State, November 4, 1843, and his PARENTS, HIRAM AND LYDIA (Batchelder) FRENCH, WERE ALSO NATIVES OF THE SAME LOCALITY. THE FATHER ENGAGED IN MERCHANDISING IN EARLY LIFE, BUT AFTERWARD SETTLED ON A FARM AND DEVOTED HIS ENERGIES TO AGRICULTURAL PURSUITS IN MARRIMACK COUNTY, WHERE HE REARED HIS FAMILY AND SPENT HIS ENTIRE LIFE. HIS DEATH OCCURRED IN 1863, AND HIS WIFE,HAVING SURVIVED HIM TWO YEARS, PASSED AWAY IN APRIL 1865. THEIR FAMILY NUMBERED SIX SONS AND TWO DAUGHTERS WHO REACHED ADULT AGE. HENRY, WHO SERVED IN THE LATE WAR AS A LIEUTENANT IN THE TWELFTH NEW HAMPSHIRE INFANTRY, WAS KILLED IN THE BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG, WHILE AIDING IN THE DEFENSE OF THE OLD FLAG, AND THE UNION, HIRAM W., IS A FARMER IN DOUGLAS COUNTY, ILLINOIS: Charles is the third in order of birth: SAMUEL T., RESIDES IN KANSAS CITY: FRANK IS AN ARTIST OF NEW YORK CITY: OLIVE IS THE WIFE OF JACOB MOORE, OF MANCHESTER N.H., and CLARA IS MRS. FRENCH New Hampshire has furnished to Macon county not a few of her worthy citizens, including Mr. French, who was born in Loudon, November 4, 1843, and is a grandson of Samuel and Susan (Tilton) French. The grandfather was one of the leading and influenttial citizens of his locality and was prominent in politics as a representative of the whig party. At one time he served as sheriff of Merrimack county New Hampshire. His son, HIRAM FRENCH ALSO A NATIVE OF THAT STATE, WAS FOR SOME YEARS A MERCHANT IN THE TOWN OF PITTSFIELD, BUT LATER RETIRED FROM COMMERCIAL LIFE AND TOOK UP HIS ABODE UPON A FARM DEVOTING HIS REMAINING DAYS TO GENERAL AGICULTURAL PERSUITS., HE MARRIED LYDIA BATCHELDER AND IN THEIR HOME C. W. French spent his youthful days, being trained to habits of industry, economy and integrity- habits which in later years have borne rich fruits. His education was acquired in the east and after attending the grammer schools he became a pupil of the Pittsfield Academy. Source; Will of HIRAM FRENCH, 5 July 1863, Probate court of Merrimack county New Hampshire Town of Pittsfield In the name of God, Amen, I, Hiram French of Loudon in the County of Merrimack State of New Hampshire, being weak in body but of a sound and perfect mind and memory, for which I have reason to praise God, do make and publish and declare this my last will and testament and herein dispose of all my worldly estate, in manner following to wit: FIRST: I order and direct my executors herein named to pay all my just debts and funeral charges soon after as may be, after my decease. SECOND: I give and bequeath to my six sons and two daughters (vis) OLIVE E. L. CLOUGH, HENRY A. L. FRENCH, CLARA A. GREENE, HIRAM W. FRENCH, CHARLES W. FRENCH, SAMUEL T. FRENCH, her heirs and assigns forever all the rest residue and remainder of my estate, real and personal and mixed. whenever found, and however situated, including all the interest either in the real or personal estate of my FATHER, SAMUEL FRENCH bequeathed in his last will and testament to me. And I do hereby appoint REUBEN L. FRENCH, and JOHN L. FRENCH, both of Pittsfield in said county my Executors of my last will and testament, hereby revoking all former wills by by me made. HUTCHENS one of the Witnesses, whose names are to be said instrument, subscribed, that of the execution thereof, the said deceased was more than twenty-one years of age and of sane mind, and he did Sign, Seal and Publish the same as his last Will, and Attested and subscribed the same together as witnesses to the execution thereof in the presence of the said Testator.
