John French was supposedly born in Dearborn MI and settled in Wells Co. Indiana. His second wife Lydia Wiest was born in Fairfield Co. Indiana. The 1860 census in Warren Co. Iowa stated that he was a teamster and all he had as property was a wagon and horse team worth $400. The 1870 census showed that his wife was Married to a Willard Smith in Warren Co, Iowa and my great grandma Elsie was listed as a Stepdaughter; so either John French left her or he died! "Mystery" As far as your Indiana Short I would love to see some document listing my 4X great grandfather Andrew Short as his son. John Short b. in 1756 would be the right age to be Andrew's father, but I have never found any listing of his son. There was a John Short of Scottish heritage with a father named Thomas Shortt who did have a son named Thomas Andrew Short b. June 6 1789 in VA which would match up, but my searches have proven from census and offspring of that Thomas Andrew during the same time my Andrew settled in Ohio then Iowa! Help!! I think I am going crazy!!! haha aren't we all?
