Elsie M, French Short

My GED is about complete with the exception of my great grandmother's line of French! Elsie French was born Feb. 14 1868; I think in Iowa, but I have no proof! I have been told her mother was Lydia Wiest and her father was John G. French of Indiana but again I have no proof. She Married my Greatgrandfather Harmon Brittain Short in Warren Co. Iowa. That I have proof of. I have two 1880 census showing a 12 old Elsie French in Warren Co. Iowa with a mother of Lydia and a step-father of Willard Smith. Elsie's father's birth place was listed as MI and mother in IN. This could be John and Lydia I have been told of and I also know my grandfather had his name changed in 1920's because a distinct dislike for his name sake Willard which could have been his step-grandfather. The other 12 year old Elsie French shows she was in Pittsford Iowa but her mothers name was Helen French and said to have been widowed!
The problem with the Lydia Wiest French and John G. French is that records show both died and were buried in Indiana in the 1890's. Can anyone shed some light on the French Connection?? jshort03@tampabay.rr.com shorty
