There is no argument that a Michael FRENCH was in Spartanburg, SC, area about the same time that one finds the four identified brothers, William, Joseph, Simon and Lafford living on the Pacolet River in SC.However, none of the land or military records (including the NARA pension files) indicate my Lafford's siblings included a Michael.
1763Samuel FRENCH and James FRENCH shown in NC in 1763 - on tax list of Anson Co.
1765 NJ records indicate Joseph FRENCH has recently left his identified property at Raritan Landing.
1769-- Neal FRENCH and Joseph FRENCH sign the Regulators Petition -- Petition dated 9 October 1769. [Anson County]
1770, Nov 19[Abstracted from the Original at the North Carolina Archives by Joel S. Russel]
Field Return of the Regiment of Militia for Anson County, at a General Muster, the 19th day of November 1770, pursuant to the Governor's OrdersAt the Court House
[Commissioned Officers]
James Pickett, Captain;
Joseph French, Lieutenant;
William Pickett, Ensign
3 [Serjents] 3 [corporals] 1 [drummer] 53 [underarms] 10 [absent] 62 [total] 47 [effective men]
[Officers recommended to vacancies]William Pickett, Lieut., Robert Jarman, Ens.
[Officers resigned or moved out of the County]Lieut. Joseph French removed out of the county.
Joseph & a William French are next found in SC when mentioned in patent records for land located on the Pacolet River.
FRENCH DNA testing indicate that Samuel and Lafford's descendants have a common ancestor. It is very possible that Michael is one of the sons of Samuel FRENCH, Sr. and thus a cousin to Lafford.
Note: If one checks the associated family trees shown on the FRENCH DNA web site, please remember that the tree linking Joseph FRENCH of Raritan Landing to the Joseph FRENCH of Shrewsbury, Monmouth County, NJ, and thus the Thomas FRENCH, Quaker, West Jersey line, has been shown to be in error and should be disregarded. At this time the test subject's ancestory has only been proven back to Lafford FRENCH and his unknown 1st wife.Circumstantial evidence strongly supports that Lafford's father was the Joseph FRENCH discussed above.
